Selected Letters II, p.374 Letter to Madame Straus, 6 June 1908: "I read with amazement that Schlumberg was putting himself forward for the Academy. Although I'm afraid of running up against the pusillanimous and time-serving spirit of the Figaro, I intend to write (which alas doesn't mean getting accepted and published) an article on that blackguard. I shall substitute insinuation for insult so as to have a better chance of being published."

   Selected Letters II, p.377 Letter to Madame Straus, 15 June 1908: "Naturally I shan't talk about the Affair. [...] that if Schlumberg were merely a snob and had been nominated for that, well and good, but that he has written books and there's something offensive in the idea that he might be nominated for his books. However I'd say all this rather better, less seriously, less politely, drawing attention to his feet, without any pretension to good taste or even good faith. But Calmette??"
