Letter to Suzette Lemaire, 20 May? 1895: "Kindly tell Madame your mother that I haven't had time to get the little story I wrote about her and about you published in a paper. (I tried La Patrie, and failed, and La Presse too.) [...] If she won't send it to Le Gaulois, I should be pleased if she would, as she offered to do, put me in touch with Le Gaulois so I can get them to publish a page of mine. Once they have taken two or three things of mine, I can easily slip them my little story about Mme Lemaire, who would then no longer be responsible for it."

Kolb suggested that the story had been lost, but it now looks fairly certain that this refers to the manuscript "Autrefois tristes d'être si peu de temps belles..."
