Manuscript fragment from Jean Santeuil

If summer was in some respects the dead season in the house, where the fireplaces were empty, the windows left open, it seemed just like the others to submit without resistance to the mildness of the air and allow it to penetrate, it was at the beginning of winter on the other hand that by communication with the outdoors, opposing from four o'clock onwards in the half extinguished light of the sky a light, closed to the influences from outside it developed its own life and above all starting from the day where Jean, warming himself before at the fire in the drawing-room, had breathed in that odour of chimneys in which a fire is lit for the first time which seems to precede as in days gone by all the pleasures to announce to us as in days gone by the pleasures of the mysterious Christmas season and New Year's Day, that the house closed to the influences of the outdoors [interrupted]
