[Author's note]

I say a project of M. Briand's for the sake of simplicity, the worrying resolutions being common to a number of different projects. But naturally the Briand project is much less injurious than the others, being the work of a secular mind, no doubt, but in certain aspects, very much superior. M. Briand, if he is not aware of it, really ought to read a discussion by M. Charles Gide on the subject of separation, a discussion published by the Bulletin de l'Action pour l'union morale. M. Gide looked at the problem only from an economic point of view. But these few pages are some of the most profound written on the subject.
